CLLR.
Jonathan O Brien
Jonathan O'Brien is Sinn Féin's councillor
for the Cork North West Ward. Jonathan has been a member of Cork City
Council since 2000, and topped
the poll in Cork North West in the local elections of 2004. He heads
the Sinn Féin group on the council and is a member of several
committees.
Jonathan lives in Farranree with his wife
Gillian and four children. He
has a keen interest in both sports and politics. As the parent of a
young family he has first hand experience of the issues ordinary people
deal with every day.
Jonathan has established a reputation as a
hard-working and outspoken
champion of issues that other politicians prefer to neglect. One of the
founding members of COCAD (Coalition of Communities Against Drugs), he
was involved in the picketing of a drug-dealer’s house for over a year,
which ended in the dealer leaving the area. More recently, he has
spear-headed Sinn Fein’s campaign for a full-time ambulance base and
A&E on the Northside. Last year, he authored a Sinn Féin discussion
document on the issue of anti-social behaviour.
On the City Council, Jonathan has
consistently raised the issues of
housing, health services, service charges, recycling facilities and the
need for greater investment in Cork’s Northside. He has been a vocal
supporter of a debt-free and independent Cork Airport.
Standing in Cork North Central in the 2002
general election, Jonathan
polled 2,860 first preference votes for Sinn Féin. Standing again in
2007, he increased this tally to 3,456. He was re-elected to Cork City
Council in 2009.
